We’re delighted to announce a new range of courses specifically designed for our Leisure Marine clients, created for both sail and power boaters.
Our practical medical training is delivered by seagoing medical professionals who have been through the worst case scenarios and can utilise their experiences for the benefits of you and your crew.
Emergencies take on a whole new meaning out at sea and optimal performance in high-stakes situations requires crew to commit to their training and correct errors while they are in low-stakes learning situations.
To achieve this, we base the training around experiential learning with limited but necessary theoretical work to underpin and develop practical skills and understanding. Tempo and skill requirements are increased as competence develops. We get it wrong in training, so we get it right come the day.
We recommend completion of the RYA First Aid at Sea course prior to attending a Leisure Marine course with Red Square Medical, but it’s not essential.
Our training services can be tailored entirely to the specific vessel and crew too. We will work with you to develop a training plan that not just meets your needs, but exceeds them.
We will provide training equipment that matches your own kit on board to give you the ultimate immersive learning experience and leave you feeling confident with accessing and using your own equipment in the event of a real emergency.
Training can be delivered on board your vessel too, which makes the environment totally realistic and scenarios all the more meaningful.
Sample Scenarios
- Catastrophic bleeds after a galley accident.
- Young crew member, found collapsed in their cabin, unknown cause with subsequent medical evacuation to the main deck to handover to ambulance crew ashore.
- Medical cardiac arrest of an elderly crew member on the deck with a return of spontaneous circulation and subsequent care whilst awaiting medical evacuation.
- Crew member has fallen down the hatch and suffered multiple injuries. Subsequent rescue by helicopter winch from deck.
- A crew member reports feeling unwell. A patient assessment and simulated call to shoreside medical services allows you to treat them successfully onboard.
Other Practical Sessions could include
- Fracture management.
- Wound management.
- Medication and injections.
- Stretchers and evacuation.
The courses last from 1 to 3 days and can be geared to your needs, goals, crew and vessel, with modules bolted on as required.
1 Day - SOS Medi-Prepare
The essential training to prepare the whole crew for a medical emergency on board. Your crew will be taken through a refresher on all things maritime first aid plus patient assessment, extrication and handovers.
We will provide training equipment that is identical to the equipment that you will carry onboard to ensure a fully immersive experience.
2 Days - SOS Medi-Protect
Everything covered on SOS Medi-Prepare and the must have package for essential training combined with risk avoidance support. This module brings in more detailed patient assessment techniques, common medical conditions, injection techniques and wound management.
We are experienced sea-going medics who know what works onboard and what you need to be prepared for.
3 Days - SOS Medi-Prevent
The package that supports you in essential training and risk avoidance, and also how to recognise and take action with regard to your and your crew’s mental health.
In addition to the topics covered on days 1 and 2, our workshop style session on mental health awareness is designed to help you figure out how to understand each other and recognise any early warning signs that things aren’t so great. Good mental health is all about self-awareness and looking out for each other, and it’s never been more important than now.
