What's your day job?
I am an HSE Offshore Medic and owner of Red Square Medical. I am responsible for delivering and refining the services that we offer our clients.
How long have you been a maritime medic?
If I answer that you may figure out just how old I really am! But I have been doing it now for 22 years and still love it as much as I did when I first started out.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I particularly enjoy forming good working relationships with our clients and refining what we do to ensure that their needs are met entirely. I am pretty obsessed with medicine at sea so this is a dream job really. I also consider myself incredibly fortunate to have a great team that challenges me daily and makes me better at what I do, along with a healthy dose of humour. Without them, I wouldn’t have the wonderful business that is Red Square Medical.
What do you do in your spare time?
I run every day, a throwback to my competitive running days, and so that I can eat cake without concern!
I also read obsessively. Anything at all.
O love being outdoors. I live in the South Downs National park so have the luxury of beautiful countryside on my doorstep.
Tell us more about your background in the military?
I joined the Royal Navy as a baby medic and realised that I had come home. I loved everything about it, the discipline, the people, the excitement, even the failures but most of all I loved running a sickbay on board ship. I was fortunate enough to have some really inspiring mentors that helped me achieve all that I wanted during my tenure in the RN. It was sad to say goodbye, but if I stayed then I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to explore the commercial sector which is equally fascinating.
What led you to start Red Square Medical?
It happened by accident really. I have a passion for medicine at sea and wasn’t sure how to direct it. A couple of random opportunities came up to assist a team onboard a fleet of ships and then the old word of mouth kicked in and then the rest, as they say, is history! Since then, I have strived to create an inclusive and non-hierarchical company culture where anyone can challenge what we do. The team that I have been building are exceptional people and I love to soak up their experience and suggestions for improvement.
What would you say your passion is as a Medic?
Trauma. All day, every day.
What do you offer Red Square Medical clients that they may not get from another company?
There are many brilliant companies out there offering similar services to Red Square Medical. I wouldn’t want to say that we are better than them but I hope that there is a spot for us within the sector and we like to work with people on a more personal level. Really it is client driven, they will get a fantastic service from any of our competitors but they might just prefer our approach to the delivery of the service. The whole team are seafarers and we all hold current professional medical qualifications. I always like to think that having lived through the worst case scenarios it helps us relate to our clients in a way that perhaps not all people can.
What are your aspirations for Red Square Medical?
Gosh, good question! I don’t want to grow it into a big company because one of the things that makes it so special to me is the ability to draw in the exact right person for each element of what we do. I’m fully invested in building a company that seafaring medics want to work with and I would love it if clients that came to us do so because they are 100% invested in the health and welfare of their crew from accidents and injury to preventative medicine. Each person matters, they are not another number to us.
