At Red Square Medical, we like to think we’re a pretty happy bunch most of the time! But did you know that your happiness can affect your health too?
Research has shown that 80-90% of health issues can be put down to lifestyle. However, happiness and mental well being are even more important than lifestyle and our state of happiness has a profound impact on our health. Did you know that unhappy people are three times more likely to catch a virus?
Happy people are healthier!
Now, you might be thinking this is all a bit far fetched, but as this webinar from Dr Rangan Chatterjee states, happiness is a skill that can be improved and there’s no cost!
Of course, this doesn’t mean that if we all adopt an unhealthy lifestyle but think we’re happy, we’ll live longer. Nor does it mean that we shouldn’t acknowledge what’s not so good, or not going well. That’s all really important. But there’s some decent research to back up the connection between happiness and health, and we’re all for being happy and if we can!
It’s easy to slip into the mindset of thinking that happiness and success are the same. They’re not! Yet we’ve probably all been stuck in that space at some point in our lives.
An interesting exercise that Dr Rangan describes is to imagine that a detective is following you for 24 hours and write down everything you do in that time. Then look at how many of those actions or activities actually made you truly happy. It’s probably less than you might think.
But let’s come back to this idea that happiness is a skill that can be learned and developed. That’s powerful stuff right? Who wouldn’t want to be happier, especially if it also improves your health?
There are a number of interesting concepts that Dr Rangan discusses. One of our favourites is the idea of a ‘Micro Stress Dose’ (MSD). These are the normally small but not insignificant doses of stress that accumulate through the day. In isolation, they’re all manageable.
But when they build up, we get closer to our stress threshold… when we reach that threshold, things start to go wrong. We start with the negative internal dialogue that activates a stress response, we turn to the bad habits we rely on to handle emotional stress, and when our stress response is triggered, we see the world through a nervous state with no real perspective.
There are tons of nifty one-liners in the webinar, including…
- We can’t control what happens, but we can choose our response.
- Be the change you want to see in the world.
- Be kind to yourself, we’re all doing the best we can.
- Next time, choose to do it differently.
- The greatest prison is the one you create in your mind.
Love them or hate them, and there’s definitely a level of cheesiness there, but they do all have a little something that rings true.
Isn’t it refreshing though, to think that happiness is something we can develop and improve and we love the idea that you can get even more out of life with the right tools.
Enjoy the webinar and remember that you can feel happier than you do now and it’s not as hard as you think!
