Tracey and Karl Santrian head up BZ Maritime Leadership and understand that whilst technical ability and skills are important, the greatest risks to superyacht operations are poor leadership, under-performing crew members, and inadequate teamwork.
BZ Maritime Leadership works with vessels to focus on professional maritime leadership and CPD, creating high performance crews with mental fitness and resilience, intelligent recruitment and selection of crew, then looking at a growth mindset for career success. All of this is underpinned by ‘Train-2-Train’, a program to develop onboard skills and ensure vessels have capable onboard trainers with the necessary knowledge and understanding to deliver their own, highly effective training onboard.
The BZ Maritime Leadership team were asked to join the Superyacht Training Group after providing taster training sessions at the Genoa Superyacht Hub. Tracey and Karl’s belief that good leadership and training increases onboard safety and reduces risks, aligns with the STG philosophy of wanting to make yachts a safer place to work and live. So joining the STG was a natural choice.
The power of a team working together toward a shared vision and goal is significantly more powerful than individual companies working in isolation. BZ believes that the STG group identity increases the ability to influence best practice within the superyacht sector and beyond. It also helps that the STG members all believe in the same intrinsic values of safety, training and supporting one another.
As one of the newer members of the STG, with a new business as well, they told us it’s been great to add the logo to their website and identify with other member companies who have a world class reputation for safety and training within the Superyacht world. They feel it’s important to be part of a ‘one stop shop’ for owners, management companies and captains where they can obtain a variety of high-quality training resources.
Being a member of the STG gives them the invaluable ability to confidently recommend a company to their clients, safe in the knowledge that its values, ability and standards align with their own. BZ Maritime Leadership’s hope is that being able to recommend other Group members will help the reputation of the STG to grow, both for the benefit of members, but also to contribute towards better and safer working practices.
Tracey and Karl’s wealth of experience (72 years between them!!) of working within the maritime environment means that they understand the physical and psychological factors that the crews are working with. BZ Maritime Leadership believes that professional leadership is at the heart of every evolution onboard. Yachts with a good leadership team attract high quality crew, where safety is increased and delivery standards for guests and owners are excellent. Good leaders also recognise that crew development is continuous; as such BZ Maritime Leadership’s programmes meet this requirement; developing crew who form part of a high performing team.
