Finding the right level of medical training in the marine industry can be tricky, especially for leisure sailors and power boaters. There simply isn’t a lot of choice and you could find yourself on a course that’s too basic, or at the other end of the scale biting off more than you can chew! It can also be difficult to find instructors who really understand what it’s like to be a long way from shore and having to manage a casualty (and a boat!) for quite some time before help arrives.
Firstly, for leisure sailors and power boaters, there’s the RYA First Aid at Sea
course. This is a one day course covering the basics of life support but with some content specific to boating.
- The recovery position in a confined space
- CPR, including the drowning protocol
- Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
- Seasickness and dehydration
- Medical assistance or advice by VHF
- Helicopter rescue
We’d recommend this course as a great starting point. It’s a fantastic way to help get the essentials embedded, so you feel more comfortable managing a situation when help isn’t too far away. This qualification is a requirement for those moving up to RYA Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.
In the commercial marine world, the International Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) governs training requirements and there are three levels of medical training. The courses are Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved. Red Square Medical delivers all three courses through our training centre partners and dates are available on our website.
MCA approved STCW Elementary First Aid
– provides a basic knowledge of what to do when faced with an accident or medical emergency and is normally a 1 day course. It covers the initial emergency response actions that a person will need to take should there be a trauma or medical emergency onboard. The course covers the use of Category C stores which is generally what will be available immediately in an emergency.
MCA approved STCW Medical First Aid
– The main purpose of this course is to apply immediate first aid in the event of an accident or illness on board. It’s more advanced, lasts 4 days and includes everything on the Elementary First Aid course but at a greater depth plus muscular-skeletal injuries, medical emergencies and trauma assessments. Category A, B or C medical stores may be covered depending on the candidate’s requirements. It’s aimed at those travelling more than 60NM offshore (but less than 150NM) and is a requirement for many intermediate level superyacht roles.
MCA approved STCW Proficiency in Medical Care
– The purpose of this course is to provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board. It’s a 5 day course that includes assessment of all of the body systems, common medical conditions and wound management. Category A or B medical stores may be covered depending on the candidate’s requirements. It also covers the best use of telemedicine support as you could be offshore and need to manage your casualty for some time before help is available or the casualty can be taken off.
But what happens if you need a little more than the RYA course but not quite as much as the MCA courses offer? Or just if you need something a little more bespoke to meet your needs and your specific situation?
That’s where the team at Red Square Medical can help!
We offer a series of medical training courses from 1 to 3 days long that can be delivered in a classroom or right onboard your own boat. We’ll assess what you need, find any gaps in your knowledge and we have the flexibility to add on modules if there’s something in particular that you want to know more about.
So, whether you’re a family taking part in the ARC, a couple ticking off bucket-list destinations as you sail the world, someone who enjoys fishing away from shore, or a coastal leisure sailor or power boater, we have just the course for you.
Our aim is to give you the confidence to manage medical situations onboard in a competent manner, and to be able to make use of a bespoke medical kit and telemedicine support when you need to.
